Ubuntu 8.04 is very old and no longer maintained, it dates back to 2008 and there have been 8 releases since.

I am not sure what version of WMP was about in 2008.

All you have tried should have worked and do work in more up to date Ubuntu versions.

Consider installing 12.04 where it definitely works.

Thanks for responding. I have a video which can only be played through WMP 9 or higher. When I click on the video I get a blank screen

When I say that all my players don`t work (I have some more ), I mean they all work fine but not with this particular wmv file. Really strange .

As for upgrading , no chance , it`s a no-no. Tried and failed it`s a closed OS meaning the OS is tweaked to the machine.
